Reliability and steadiness are essential to any successful career, whether you're a teacher, a doctor, an engineer, or a barber. That's because these qualities are directly tied to long-term performance. You won't achieve success over the years if you don't stick to your principles, if you fail to learn from your mistakes, or if you regularly change your approach without good reason. We know this to be the case in our working lives, but when it comes to investing, studies show that a majority of individual investors do just the opposite: They unreliably change course all the time, and not surprisingly, the results are dismal.
Missing most of the upside
The best-performing mutual fund from 2000 to 2010 was the CGM Focus Fund (CGMFX), which returned more than 18% annualized despite a flat S&P 500. The fund's outstanding track record would have turned $100,000 into more than $500,000 over those 10 years. The only problem? According to Morningstar, the average investor in the fund actually lost 11% annually over those same very successful 10 years. That is not a typo: The fund gained 18% annualized, but its average investor lost 11% annualized. You're not crazy to ask how that is possible.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By RichardCox]
Bullish momentum in oil prices has been one of this year's driving market stories. Even with the declines seen in recent weeks, West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) is showing year-to-date gains of more than 21%:

What: Shares of W&T Offshore (NYSE: WTI ) were getting pumped up today, gaining as much as 16% after reporting earnings and increasing its dividend payout.
- [By The Energy Report]
ND: Currently, I continue to be a bit cautious offshore, recommending only a company called W&T Offshore Inc. (WTI). WTI is attractive because of its higher-than-average historical well success rate in addition to the cash flow from producing assets in the region. The company also has some attractive Permian assets that make for a nice complement to the offshore blocks.

Looking offshore for success
Sticking with the theme of oil and gas for a moment, let me also turn your attention to W&T Offshore (NYSE: WTI ) which, just like Apache, holds assets onshore in the oil-rich Permian Basin, but has a substantial chunk of assets offshore (roughly 1.2 million of its 1.4 million leased acres) in the Gulf of Mexico.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Bryan Murphy]
PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE:PEP), consider your dominance in the bottled water arena - via Aquafina - under a serious attack. And for The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), well, your Dasani brand's #2 position in the market share race isn't as secure as you'd like it to be either. There's a new name in town you need to watch out for - Alkaline Water Company Inc. (OTCBB:WTER). This young company is hungry... well, thirsty, and with its impressive product already making a big splash in the few markets its been introduced to, WTER is not only positioned to make a dent in the bottled water revenue being generated by the likes of KO and PEP, this little company may be serving up some solid gains for its investors as well.

The initial thought may be that it's a bit of an awkward sales venue. The more one thinks about it - and digs - the more this relationship makes sense. And if you did really deep into the details (into a philosophical level), a "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" scenario surfaces. What's this not-really-unusual relationship? The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (OTCBB:WTER) is now selling its Alkaline88 brand of water through Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). Take that Primo Water Corporation (NASDAQ:PRMW)!
