Hot Asian Stocks To Own For 2014

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of FARO Technologies (NASDAQ: FARO  ) are down over 11% today after the company reported underwhelming earnings for the fiscal first quarter.

So what: FARO clocked in with revenue of $65.4 million and earnings of $0.27 per share, both of which came in below Wall Street's consensus, which sought $67.6 million on the top line and $0.30 in EPS. The revenue result was essentially flat year-over-year, and FARO executives pointed out "sluggish European and Asian markets where order and sales levels remain somewhat weaker than expected" as reasons for the underperformance, but also noted intensifying competition as a challenge going forward.

Now what: FARO is now near the low end of its 52-week range, but has had difficulty making any progress in revenue or earnings over that period, so some share-price stagnation is to be expected. However, deteriorating operating margins (from 12.9% to 8.7% year over year) are worrisome, and at a P/E over 25, FARO isn't exactly cheap. I'd stay on the sidelines without more cause for optimism.

Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) extremely simple workaround for VirnetX's (NYSEMKT: VHC  ) networking patents reveal how easily the company's claims can be ignored. Add in a recent court victory by Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) over many of the same VirnetX claims, and the cracks in the patent trolling strategy start to show.

While there's no denying that Vringo, Inc. (NASDAQ:VRNG) and VirnetX Holding Corporation (NYSEMKT:VHC) have made a big name for themselves - not to mention made big, even if uneven, gains for shareholder of VHC and VRNG - within the worked of intellectual property enforcement, bigger isn't always better. Smaller companies in the IP arena have a focus and flexibility that larger players like VirnetX and Vringo could never enjoy. Take, for instance, Endeavor IP Inc. (OTCBB:ENIP). This little patent owner may not look like much at first glance, but just ask the four organizations that have already entered licensing deals with ENIP and/or the four, well, now five companies that are currently litigating against Endeavor IP.... this little outfit packs a huge punch.

Further declines in profit margins will most likely cause further declines in share price. One key upcoming event could have a significant impact on Apple's profit margin, the setting of a royalty rate for Apple's products that infringe on Virnetx (VHC) patents. Apple was sued by Virnetx for infringing on its data security patents with the trial concluding in November, 2012, with a Virnetx victory. After many motions and negotiations no settlement has been reached between Virnetx and Apple. Judge Davis is expected to rule shortly (probably within the next two weeks) on a royalty rate for the offending products. The royalty rate could be set anywhere between .5% to 1.5% and possibly even more. As this royalty rate will apply to all infringing products, (iPhone, iPad, and others supporting Face Time and iMessage), this will have a direct effect on Apple's profit margin which will also impact stock price.

    Monday's Volume: 674,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 222,171

    Volume % Change: 149%

Shares of GALT jumped higher on Monday after Ascendiant initiated coverage on the stock with a buy recommendation.

From a technical perspective, GALT spiked sharply higher here with strong upside volume. This stock has been uptrending for the last three months, with shares ripping higher from its low of $3.95 to its recent high of $13.21. During that move, shares of GALT have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GALT within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if GALT manages to take out Monday's high of $12.44 and then once it clears its 52-week high at $13.21 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GALT as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $11 or at $10 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 222,171 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then GALT will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above $13.21, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $15 to $16.
