Top 5 Retail Companies For 2014

Last Sunday, I offered up the Father's Day Portfolio for investors looking to beat the market over long periods of time. And while I can't make any promises, of course, I feel pretty darn good about its chances of success. One of the reasons why? Because I added Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS  ) to the mix.

It ain't easy
Generally speaking, retailers are pretty tough. There are no real barriers to entry, and moats are pretty hard to come by. But, specialty retailers that provide something unique can be a different story. And I think that's what we have here with Dick's Sporting Goods. You can see by the chart below that shareholders over the last 10 years are feeling pretty good about life right now:

DKS Total Return Price data by YCharts

First reason: room to grow
Dick's Sporting Goods is the largest full-line sporting goods retailer in the U.S. today. With 520 namesake stores to go along with 81 Golf Galaxy stores, it's established quite the national footprint. But there's still room for more. Plenty more. Not long ago, management saw room for around 900 Dick's Sporting Goods stores in the U.S. However, today they see a new opportunity to tap into an additional smaller-store concept, taking that potential market opportunity up to 1,100stores.

Pictorial Press Ltd./Alamy"Hercules" stars Dwayne Johnson. From the country's darling "food with integrity" restaurant chain posting what should be another strong report to the premium coffeehouse giant percolating fresh financials, here are some of the things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Growing Lines at Chipotle Earnings season continues this week with Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) reporting financials on Monday afternoon. Chipotle has bucked the trend of other eateries. It's been growing sales, earnings and comparable-store sales. Plenty of chains stumbled during the holiday quarter, blaming snowstorms for keeping hungry patrons away. Chipotle grew. The following quarter saw many restaurant operators stumble on the shift of the Easter holiday. Chipotle grew. It won't be a surprise to see Chipotle growing nicely again on Monday. Tuesday -- A Pop Star Goes Flat Selling Coke and Sprite isn't as easy as it used to be. Coca-Cola (KO) reports on Tuesday, and the beverage giant's likely to deliver the flattest report of the week. Analysts see a profit of 63 cents a share, even with what it earned a year earlier. Revenue is supposed to clock in barely unchanged, inching 0.6 percent higher to $12.8 billion. Sales of sugary soft drinks have been fading in popularity, but Coca-Cola's acquisitions in juices, water, energy drinks and coffee apparently haven't been enough to move the needle. Wednesday -- Friends With Financial Benefits Facebook (FB) should provide the fireworks that Coca-Cola lacked a day earlier when it steps up with its quarterly results on Wednesday. Analysts see revenue and earnings per share climbing 55 percent and 68 percent, respectively. Facebook's growth has been fueled in part by its user and engagement growth, but mostly through its ability to better monetize its traffic. If analysts seem a bit ambitious in their targets, consider that Facebook has blown past Wall Street profit estimates with

Alamy Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) has brewed some big gains since announcing on Wednesday afternoon that Coca-Cola (KO) is investing $1.25 billion in the company behind the Keurig platform and striking a 10-year collaborative deal to get Coca-Cola's brands into the upcoming Keurig Cold maker of cold and carbonated beverages. That's going to be special -- and the market loved the news by sending Green Mountain's shares upward Thursday and Friday on the news -- but something even bigger may be brewing at Green Mountain in a few months. The leader in single-serve coffee is getting ready to roll out a new brewing machine in the fall. Keurig 2.0 has all of the functionality of the original platform that continues to lead the industry. Green Mountain announced on Wednesday that it sold a record 5.1 million brewers during the holiday quarter. Its original coffee maker is going strong, but the new system could be even better. Java 2.0 Green Mountain's original Keurig has a problem. The patents protecting the K-Cup portion packs that provide caffeinated blasts of coffee -- one cup at a time -- expired in late 2012. After years of scoring healthy margins on premium coffee refills, Green Mountain faces a future where anyone can put out K-Cups. It may have healthy working relationships with some of the biggest brands in the industry, but that could end at any time. The patent expirations led Green Mountain to introduce Keurig VUE, a new brewer with an entirely new refill system. It hasn't sold well. Since it can't accept the original K-Cup portion packs, it's limited in the variety of flavors and beverages that it can brew. Keurig 2.0 will solve that. It takes K-Cups. However, it will also be the first Keurig machine that also makes entire pots of coffee. Using new K-Carafe pods, the new brewers will be able to brew 28-ounce servings. More importantly for Green Mountain's bottom line, the new K-Carafe refills will be patent protected for a long time. No Ord
